Sundborn Inc is very pleased to announce the availability of the Sundborn Sweater, hand knitted in GreenWool, our own pure Icelandic hand spun wool yarn. It is offered by commission only and only in its Sundborn Sweater Ensemble for the safekeeping of this pristine one-of-a-kind garment.
An important component of the energetic continuum which flows into the finished Sundborn Sweater Ensemble is the hand spinning of the GreenWool itself. GreenWool fiber never experiences intense processing or mechanical picking and carding. Instead, in spring we select the premium black fleeces from our small hand raised flock of Icelandic sheep, just shorn, for fashioning the GreenWool yarn.
Black, the sum of all colors, vibrant and variegated, has the most dynamic presence and the finest hand of the Icelandic breed’s natural colors.
Their dual coated fleeces are soft and fluffy underneath with long wavy wool outside; spun together they melt into a single soft strand of yarn with remarkable durability.
Allowed a full year’s growth, the longwool fleeces are carefully labeled and ready for our eager hand spinners.
Each local hand spinner works directly from the fresh, luscious, intact fleece, choosing from a palette of nuances in texture and color, spinning the long-stapled fibers through her skilled fingers into a work of art; it is the sensation of spinning fiber from the back of a burly, living animal into a single strand of yarn equally alive.
Each separate animal’s fleece becomes a package of skeins, monitored by our quality control, labeled and designated with color coding to complete a single garment.
Hand spun yarn from common, commercially processed batts or roving could never reflect the personal expression our spinners enjoy. And any bits of chaff left after the fresh fibers have flowed through the spinner’s hands only testify to the benign treatment our GreenWool yarn consistently receives.
