Safekeeping

Although incredibly warm and durable to wear, the Sundborn Sweater requires safekeeping to preserve its heirloom qualities.  Aftercare is essential:  the traditional routine of cleaning, maintenance,  and safe storage that any vulnerable, treasured garment demands.   It is mandatory that the Sweater be scrupulously clean before each storage. By design the Sweater’s top-to-bottom construction allows points of wear at cuff and hem to be repaired easily.  The elbow protection is also replaceable if necessary.  This additional care for washing  or repair can be provided at Sundborn for an additional consideration, and these treatments can then be recorded on the Presentation cum Provenance Card to update the Sweater’s history.

The garment’s integrity is safeguarded by the Sundborn Sweater Ensemble which provides first of all  an archival organic unbleached cotton muslin storage bag of museum quality.

Also with the Sundborn Sweater as part of the Ensemble are Moth Balm sachets.  Six of the seven ingredients in Moth Balm grow at our farm, all of them organic and raised sustainably.  Tansy, mugwort, and lavender have been used for centuries to safeguard newly shorn fleeces, and to these we add artemisia, costmary, and a pinch of rue.  Powerful Neem tree leaf powder comes from India for good measure. The replaceable sachets are then tucked into pillow shams whose monarch butterfly embellishment is embroidered by hand here at Sundborn in two-ply natural silk thread which is hand dyed with cochineal by Cheryl Kolander of Aurora Silk.

In addition, a striking hardwood chest is designed for safe storage and beautiful display.  The sliding top is surrounded by a fine cock beading which is picture framed and mitered.  One side of the top becomes the pull to access the interior which is lined with eastern red cedar, highly aromatic and used traditionally to discourage pests in woolens.  The corners are dovetailed narrowly as seen in 18th and early 19th century fine work.  A small brass medallion designating the front of the chest can be engraved.

Sundborn’s comprehensive commitment to quality fit for royalty continues to assure satisfaction from the first to the last detail of service.  For further information, contact us at Sundborn Inc 17000 Lystila Road, L’Anse, MI 49946,  email sundborn@up.net, or call 906 524 5868.  Thank you.
